History & Heritage

Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL) is the fourth integrated public-sector steel plant conceived under India's visionary Second and Third Five-Year Plans. Incorporating on January 29, 1964, the plant was envisioned by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru as one of the key 'Temples of Modern India' to foster national self-reliance in core industrial sectors.

The plant was built with extensive technical and economic collaboration from the erstwhile Soviet Union (USSR). Construction commenced in the late 1960s, turning the rural expanse near the confluence of the Damodar and Garga rivers into a sprawling, ultra-modern industrial metropolis.

On October 3, 1972, the first Blast Furnace ('Parvati') was formally commissioned by the then Prime Minister of India, Smt. Indira Gandhi. In 1978, Bokaro Steel Plant was merged into the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL).

Today, BSL operates modernized continuous casting facilities, hot strip mills, and cold rolling mills, standing as an indispensable economic engine that powers India's defence, aerospace, automotive, and infrastructure growth.
